THE ELEPHANT

Elephants are the largest animals living on land today, although they are just HERBIVORES!!! This means that they only feed on plants, but not animals. This enormous animal has a reason to be enormous, because they spend about 20 hours a day JUST on eating. They feed on grasses, twigs, bark, roots, small amount of fruits, seeds and flowers, and consume about 140-270kg of these a day.

Interesting facts about the elephant

1) Self-awareness
Elephants are among the small number of animals such as the Great Apes and Bottlenose Dolphin capable of recognising themselves, in other words, self-recognition.

2) Homosexuality
Can you believe that homosexuality not only occurs in human, but also in animals? In fact, African, as well as Asiatic males will engage in same-sex bonding and mounting. Such encounters are often associated with affectionate interactions such as kissing, trunk intertwining or placing trunks in each other’s mouth. Homosexuality is common in both the male and female elephants.

3) Elephant Rage
Though elephants are usually quite tame, they can be quite scary too. Adult male elephants naturally enter the periodic state called musth, which stand for madness in Hindi. (Sometimes spelt ‘must’ in English)This periodic state is characterised very excited or aggressive behavior and thick, tar-like secretion will be discharged through temporal ducts from the temporal glands from the sides of the head. Musth is somehow linked to sexual arousal or establishing dominance. A musth elephant is very dangerous to humans, despite whether it is wild or domesticated. Musth is often the cause of fatal accidents to elephant zookeepers.
